German Patent and Trade Mark Office
Tempo, Lego or MP3 – everyone knows these names and products. Economically successful ideas often find imitators. Effective procedure against plagiarism and imitation is possible with the help of the industrial property rights. Patents and utility models are protecting technical components, the brand, the “good name” and the registered design as well as the shape and color. They grant the owner claim to a forbearance and if necessary claim for damages. The German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) issues patents, bears and manages brands, utility models and designs. Additionally, it also informs the public about industrial property rights. Together with its predecessors – the Imperial Patent Office and the National Patent Office – the DPMA can look back on more than 140 years of history. Currently the agency has around 2700 employees at its offices in Munich, Jena and Berlin.
